Lewes Phoenix Project 2009

Previous Next

The Lewes Phoenix Project which started in May 2008 with a generous Heritage Lottery Grant has explored the history of the Phoenix Iron and Steel Works in Lewes.  Memories and testimonies of the workers have been recorded by Oral Historian Sarah Hitchings and many fascinating stories and documents have been discovered.  A Research Group including ex workers has tracked the development of the site and the history of the Every family who owned the Phoenix. A local school is the location for a film using interviews with ex employees and a pack of information for schools has been designed.  Many local people are involved as volunteers and are helping with organisation, IT and resources.   Wenda Bradley and Christine Hall are bringing the findings of the project together in an exhibition on the site of the old foundry and engineering works in the Foundry Gallery starting on 25th September.
